Her passion has led to the establishment her consulting company, Beyond Bingo, to create a "Multi-Dimensional Whole Life Wellness Program" designed to support seniors in maintaining their independence.

"Bingo is clearly not front and center in the care plans we recommend for our clients," she points out. Visit: http://www.beyond-bingo.com/

As a highly skilled artist, art instructor and muralist, Koziara facilitates creative art programming for seniors at all care levels from independent through Memorycare and End of Life, as well as Murals To Remember, a Beyond Bingo, Inc., trademarked program that engages the entire community in the creation of reminiscence murals in senior communities and community centers.

Colleen Koziara's SCORE Mentoring Experience: In Her Own Words

In a recent interview, Colleen shared many insights about her entrepreneurial experience and how her SCORE North Cook and Lake County mentors, Karen Spesard, Chris Banakis and Arnold Goldberg, assisted in developing her business. Visit: https://northchicago.score.org/

What do you do?

Beyond Bingo's goal is to create and bring to the world, Multidimensional Whole Life Wellness Programming, that is carefully designed to support Seniors in maintaining their independence; inspiring their continued personal growth and exploration; and filling their lives with joy and a renewed sense of purpose.

Our team specializes in the creation of signature programming models, conducts staff and management training, and has presented at ASA, ICAA and Leading Age conferences with average participant feedback scores of 87% or higher.

Colleen is a named creator on the 2010, and a named contributor on the 2012 ICAA International Innovators Award Winners for outstanding senior programming.

What inspired you to start your business?

It is very simple. I want to change the world. I believe Seniors have value to our society, our children and our world. I believe they are capable and deserve our respect and efforts. not lip-service and warehousing.

What have been the high and low points of being a business owner?

High Points: Making a difference. Seeing a resident or a staff member that may never have painted before create something they are proud of. Even better, seeing their face when others compliment them! or their children or grandchildren try to "make off" with their creations to frame and hang on their walls! There is no better feeling in the whole world than helping someone know that they are special and that they can create beauty in the world that others appreciate.

Low Point: I had truly believed that our yearlong lockdown and the massive negative effects it had on the seniors would have taught us as an industry. That we would have learned, really learned how important programming was and that I would see a real shift in our industry where it needs to be in staff and supplies and budget for engagement programming.

What have you learned from your experiences as a business owner? You must be adamant about setting a schedule, carving out personal time and making it a priority. This was my greatest lesson during the lockdown. I had no idea just how exhausted I was until I finally had some time off.

Now I schedule my weekends off. I will make exceptions two times per month on Saturdays for a special client or rescheduling, especially if Covid-19 is the issue. But Sundays I will not work and beginning in January, I only take four evening sessions a month.

What advice would you give to someone thinking of starting a small business?

My very first SCORE mentor knew the score! He said it is 16-hour days, seven days a week for about three years until you get there if you truly want to make this work. Are you REALLY ready for that? Don't start if you are not. He was absolutely correct.

The time requirement is FAR beyond whatever you might have imagined. Be sure you are ready. but if you think about all this and still want to do it? It is the absolute BEST decision I ever made! I wouldn't change it for the world.

What influenced you to seek help from SCORE?

A friend told me about them, I looked them up at the library on the northside, and that is where I met George Fink, my first mentor. Since I knew absolutely nothing about starting a business, it seemed like a good idea. I even laugh myself at the complete naivete in that statement. I am still amazed I have done this sometimes.

How Score Helped?

Oh my goodness. How they have helped. Books, additional experts they have brought in, suggestions, work lists and of course, my mentors. (SCORE is funded by the Small Business Administration)

What would you tell a fellow business owner about SCORE?

I have already sent three friends considering starting businesses to SCORE in their area. My assistant prior to Covid-19 got temporary business support after starting with me and learning about SCORE. SCORE helped me apply for the SBA EIDL as well!

Patreon is Live!

I would like to share my Dreams with you. Dreams that have been with me since I was very young and which I think have finally reached their moment to shine, with your help

I dream of creating storybooks that impart the wisdom of our Elders and of Nature to our children and provide a way for our Elders and our children to connect.

I dream of creating and providing engagement programming for our Elders that truly speaks to every aspect of their being and supports them in maintaining their independence, their joy and their sense of adventure no matter what their physical challenges might be.

I dream of these things being available easily to every senior and child who could be served by them no matter where they live or how much money they have.

Would you be willing to help me make this happen? I truly believe that together we can make these Dreams a reality! Over the course of the next three weeks, we will be expanding our content here to encompass several areas of focus.

Senior Programming, (video & downloadable hardcopy); Gentle Senior Chair Yoga classes; Creative Painting and Art Classes (live & recorded); Coloring Pages; Original Fine Art & Prints; Live Art Sessions; Children’s Books (print, ebook & recorded); and finally Audio recordings.

Thank you for being here, for reading my comments and, hopefully, for becoming a Patron of this work.

MEMORY CAFE - THURSDAY, APRIL 23, NOON-2PM - featuring CHAIR YOGA!

Memory Cafe - Beyond bingo Inc Logo with bubbles.jpg

To Support everyone during this challenging time, we have taken our Monthly Memory Cafe - ONLINE and we have expanded them to a weekly format!  Each Thursday we are joining together, from noon to 2pm, (come when you can, stay as long as you are able!) via ZOOM to support each other, make new friends, learn more important coping skills and approaches, engage with our loved one in a positive and enjoyable experience, and have some fun and laughter!

This week, we will be exercising!  Keeping fit and active is not only good for our bodies, but it is good for our minds and spirits too!  We will be spending some time discussing types of exercise and then doing a short session of specialized chair yoga.  A specialized style focused on maintaining joint flexibility, good posture and strong lungs, this exercise modality is accessible and safe for all.

Last week we had a GREAT session!  We were joined by Jim Jeske, a children's Librarian and professional storyteller from San Francisco who told us several wonderful stories by Syd Lieberman - born in Chicago, Syd was a Lifetime Achievement Award winner from the National Storytelling Network.  you can find more information about the stories Syd told at his website www.sydlieberman.com

If you would like to hear these stories, please visit Beyond Bingo on Facebook or my website www.beyond-bingo.com where I will be posting and sharing recordings later today!

As part of our time together we not only listened to stories, but we shared our own!  Storytelling is a pastime as old as humanity and sharing in the telling of stories is a wonderful way to stay connected to our loved ones.  Attached you will find the Caregiver support documents that cover the benefits of storytelling, storytelling resources, hows and whys and ways to be successful and even preserve our stories and much more!

Additionally, we learned about StoryCorps - StoryCorps is an American non-profit organization whose mission is to record, preserve, and share the stories of Americans from all backgrounds and beliefs.  Stories recorded with StoryCorps are saved to the Library of Congress.  StoryCorps not only has 1000s of interesting stories to listen to, but a free downloadable app allows you and your loved one to share your stories.  Also, StoryCorps Connect is a special segment available right now that is dedicated to collecting our stories of Quarantine during this time.  You will definitely want to take the time to check out www.StoryCorps.org.

i look forward to seeing you this week and hope you will join us for some enjoyable time together and an opportunity to connect to our larger community.

For your convenience - Following you will find the Zoom Invitation for this Thursday's session below.

Hope to see you all there!!!

MEMORY CAFE' - Something quite special this week!!! Storytelling

Last week was our 3rd get-together and WE HAD 10 FOLKS JOIN US!!!  IT WAS WONDERFUL SEEING YOU ALL!  The participants last week suggested some books they had found particularly helpful during their experiences and wanted to recommend them to others. Here is that list:

The End of Alzheimer's by Dr. Dale E. Bredesen

Untangling Alzheimer's: The Guide for Families and Professionals by Tam Cummings

My Stroke of Insight by Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor

I hope you will join us!  **If you need any assistance getting your computer or phone setup to join a ZOOM Gathering, PLEASE call me directly and I will walk you through it.  630-668-0850  (it is really easy!) This week's Cafe is going to be something very special!!

Topic: Memory Cafe - Storytelling: Tales from Quarantine!
Storytelling! Legends, Myths and Tales of Quarantine - Costumes (or at least crazy hats are encouraged!) come with a Tale to tell about your Quarantine experiences!

Memory Cafe’s exist to support Caregivers and Families living with the challenges of ADRD. Their lives are filled with the stories of before, and during. This new experience of Quarantine is creating a whole new collection of personal stories.

Storytelling is a part of what makes us human. How we tell our stories shapes our culture and profoundly affects how we understand ourselves and each other, and engage with the world around us. So this coming week, we are going to share our stories!

We will be joined by James Jeske, Librarian and Professional Storyteller from San Francisco! James will be telling “Joseph The Tailor” a Sid Lieberman story, which is ALL about stories and making “something out of nothing”.
