PAINTING SUPPLY LIST FOR SENIOR COMMUNITIES
Blick Art Supplies – www.dickblick.com – you will find a Blick U supply list for Beyond Bingo-Illinois-Painting with Colleen attached. Further information about materials included on that list are covered there.
For online shopping you can also try www.artsupply.com for most of your needs, but not all. Links are included below for the best prices I have found, but realistically, ALWAYS check Amazon one last time before placing an online order because they regularly beat even these sites.
Supplies needed for all paintings, on either ArtCards or Online are:
PAINT
The paint set listed at www.dickblick.com will be enough for 50-75 paintings (based on the useage I have experienced so far) Maybe even a few more, but it becomes very difficult to get the last bit out of the bottles. The colors are basic enough to be used for many subjects. They just require a bit more mixing. If you expect more painting you may feel free to buy the quart sizes. DO NOT buy the big 64 oz bottles of paint. No one ever uses them up before they dry up.
Canvas vs. Canvas Boards - They come in the same sizes. Canvas boards are cheaper, but more difficult to hang/display. Canvases are more expensive but easily hung and displayed.
Do not work any smaller than 11x14, and no larger than 14x18 as anything larger becomes unwieldy for most seniors with or without an easel and anything smaller begins to complicate vision challenges.
These can be purchased at Michael's, Walmart, Hobby Lobby, and sometimes JoAnne Fabrics as well as online and Carlson's. BUT, the best place for the best price at this time is MIchael's when you can get one of their coupons on a sale day.
BRUSHES see – www.dickblick.com – Recommended brushes on the BlickU Supply List for Painting with Colleen.
Brush Cleaner – REQUIRED – also included BlickU Supply List.
Paint water containers - you want something at least 8in deep and 8in across. Reuse and Recycle! Half gallon ice cream containers work great. The red Folgers coffee containers too. One of the biggest mistakes folks make is having water containers that are too small, tippable, and without enough water, the brushes don't get fully clean between paint colors and the next color ends up muddied. The bigger the better. One per person is the best, but two can share.
Paper Plates for palettes - large and white. styrofoam or paper works fine. Heavier is better than thinner, but if it is the really cheap white paper ones, just use 3 at a time
PAPERTOWELS any kind you have will work. Blue Shop towels work great -
Plastic tableclothes - these can be reused. :) the residents are actually appreciating the paint blotches from their previous art experiences on the tableclothes each time.
FINALLY - optional
Easels are optional, and not necessary. There is only one kind I would suggest (see below) as all others I have used are too "tippy" for seniors. I have found that with lighting in most communities and senior vision and arm ROM issues, and neck, back and shoulder hunching, laying the canvas flat on the table works better. It is however up to you. If yours is a more independent and high functioning group and your budget can support it for individual painting time and exploration, the addition of easels takes the experience to a whole new level! Also, it is a good idea to have one or two canvases just in case they are necessary to facilitate painting for seniors with special ROM issues.

BLICK ART - Supply List for Painting with Colleen
The supply list provided online at Blick Art includes 3 sizes of brushes for 6 painters, 10 canvases and all the paints you will need for 8-14 painting classes of 6 painters each. (8-14 is dependent upon how frugal you are with your paint. Remember, you only need a small dollop of paint in each color about the size of a quarter. Putting out any more is usually only a waste. Better to have to put out more if needed than to waste.
